Tim Smith: 2014 State Teacher of the Year!

Florin High School

TEACHERS OF THE YEAR HONORED

The best teachers not only know content; they have a knack for inspiring students. Henry James was correct when he wrote: "A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops." James' aphorism is particularly apt when it comes to those teachers who are committed to making a difference in the lives of their students.

Sacramento State recently recognized 12 award-winning teaching alumni as representatives of the thousands who were Made at Sac State.

Alumnus Timothy Smith (pictured, second from left) is a case in point. Named one of five California Teachers of the Year, he was selected as the state's representative for the National Teacher of the Year competition.

He teaches ninth- through 12th-grade algebra and advanced placement statistics at Florin High School. He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics and his teaching credential at Sacramento State in 2001, and is taking part in the University's Internet Masters in Educational Technology (iMET) graduate program.

Included in the picture, is our very own Robert Brewer, Physics Teacher and SCOE's Teacher of the Year for 2013.  (pictured, seventh from left)

SCHOLARSHIPS - ELK GROVE REGIONAL SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION (2014-2015)

Elk Grove Regional Scholarship Foundation scholarship applications will be available after December 1, 2014 for Elk Grove Unified School District graduating seniors.  Foundation scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors graduating May, 2015 and planning to attend a trade shcool, four year university/college, or community college after high school graduation.

In 2014, the Foundation awarded 149 scholarships in the total amount of $163,300, and it expects to exceed those amounts in 2015.  Many of the Foundation scholarships are based on a student's experiences and career choice and not on a high grade point average. There are pages of scholarships for seniors, and even a few for grades 9-11th.

After Devember 1, 2014 information about the scholarships, along with scholarship applications, can be found online at http://www.elkgroversf.org The deadline for submitting applications is January 23, 2015.

We encourage all students who plan on receiving additional education after high school to apply for these scholarships.

Florin High School welcomes those with disabilities to participate fully in the programs, services and activities offered to students, parents, guardians and members of the public. If you need a disability-related modification or accommodation, including auxiliary aids or services, to participate in any program, service or activity offered to you, please contact the school office at least 48 hours before the scheduled event so that we may make every reasonable effort to accommodate you. ASB is participating in the Teens for Jeans campaign that helps to provide homeless teens with jeans. We are trying to collect 10,000 pairs of jeans to have a realistic chance of receiving a $5,000 grant and a concert by The Vamps.

How can you help?

  1. Bring in any gently-used jeans (any size is okay – even children’s jeans) If you send us an email, we’ll come pick them up!
  2. We are looking for businesses/community partners that will allow us to help collect jeans also. If you know of anyone who may be able to help us, please let Ms. Vaughn know, at TVaughn@egusd.net.

We will be collecting jeans now through February 13th.   Drop off available in the front office and in B-3.

Thanks in advance for your support.
