School Loop (grades)

The best teachers not only know content; they have a knack for inspiring students. Henry James was correct when he wrote: "A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops." James' aphorism is particularly apt when it comes to those teachers who are committed to making a difference in the lives of their students.

Sacramento State recently recognized 12 award-winning teaching alumni as representatives of the thousands who were Made at Sac State.

Alumnus Timothy Smith (pictured, second from left) is a case in point. Named one of five California Teachers of the Year, he was selected as the state's representative for the National Teacher of the Year competition.

He teaches ninth- through 12th-grade algebra and advanced placement statistics at Florin High School. He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics and his teaching credential at Sacramento State in 2001, and is taking part in the University's Internet Masters in Educational Technology (iMET) graduate program.

Included in the picture, is our very own Robert Brewer, Physics Teacher and SCOE's Teacher of the Year for 2013.  (pictured, seventh from left)

Senior Graduation 2013

Career & College News

Elk Grove Regional Scholarship Foundation scholarship applications will be available after December 1, 2014 for Elk Grove Unified School District graduating seniors.  Foundation scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors graduating May, 2015 and planning to attend a trade shcool, four year university/college, or community college after high school graduation.

In 2014, the Foundation awarded 149 scholarships in the total amount of $163,300, and it expects to exceed those amounts in 2015.  Many of the Foundation scholarships are based on a student's experiences and career choice and not on a high grade point average. There are pages of scholarships for seniors, and even a few for grades 9-11th.

After Devember 1, 2014 information about the scholarships, along with scholarship applications, can be found online at The deadline for submitting applications is January 23, 2015.

We encourage all students who plan on receiving additional education after high school to apply for these scholarships.

Florin High School welcomes those with disabilities to participate fully in the programs, services and activities offered to students, parents, guardians and members of the public. Elk Grove Unified School District is once again offering the PSAT for all 10th graders this school year on Wednesday, October 15, 2014.  There is no charge for 10th graders.

In addition, we will also be offering the exam the same day to juniors who signed-up ahead of time to participate in the practice exam.

JUNIORS –  The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school juniors enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®)—a test which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.5 million entrants each year—and by meeting published program entry/participation requirements.  For more information visit

Contact Mr. Mendoza at ext. 6005 or your students’ counselor if you have any questions.
