The best teachers not only know content; they have a knack for inspiring students. Henry James was correct when he wrote: "A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops." James' aphorism is particularly apt when it comes to those teachers who are committed to making a difference in the lives of their students.

Sacramento State recently recognized 12 award-winning teaching alumni as representatives of the thousands who were Made at Sac State.

Alumnus Timothy Smith (pictured, second from left) is a case in point. Named one of five California Teachers of the Year, he was selected as the state's representative for the National Teacher of the Year competition.

He teaches ninth- through 12th-grade algebra and advanced placement statistics at Florin High School. He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics and his teaching credential at Sacramento State in 2001, and is taking part in the University's Internet Masters in Educational Technology (iMET) graduate program.

Included in the picture, is our very own Rober Brewer, Physics Teacher and SCOE's Teacher of the Year for 2013.  (pictured, seventh from left)

Senior Graduation 2013

Career & College News

Elk Grove Regional Scholarship Foundation scholarship applications will be available after December 1, 2014 for Elk Grove Unified School District graduating seniors.  Foundation scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors graduating May, 2015 and planning to attend a trade shcool, four year university/college, or community college after high school graduation.

In 2014, the Foundation awarded 149 scholarships in the total amount of $163,300, and it expects to exceed those amounts in 2015.  Many of the Foundation scholarships are based on a student's experiences and career choice and not on a high grade point average. There are pages of scholarships for seniors, and even a few for grades 9-11th.

After Devember 1, 2014 information about the scholarships, along with scholarship applications, can be found online at The deadline for submitting applications is January 23, 2015.

We encourage all students who plan on receiving additional education after high school to apply for these scholarships.

U-CAN College Recruitment Fair

On Saturday, September 13 from 10:00-2:00 at MTHS, UCAN will host its 15th annual Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Recruitment Fair.  Sponsored by UCAN, and Dr. Alan Rowe, who has long worked with the district to support students in achieving college admission and success, this event will feature representatives from 30-40 different colleges and universities.  The event is tailored toward students who want to explore a four year college experience at an HBCU, as well as for those who want to attend a four year college/university but may be ineligible for state UC or CSU admission due to lack of A-G course completion. Students attending the event may qualify for fee waivers scholarships, and even for on-the-spot-admission! Students are asked to bring copies of their transcript, SAT-ACT scores if they have them, and  letters of recommendation (again if they have them).  Click on link for flyer:

EGUSD Boad of Education Parent & Community Survey: Search for New Superintendent

The Elk Grove Unified School District’s (EGUSD) Board of Education invites the community to participate in the process of selecting the next superintendent by taking an online survey. The survey can be found in English, Spanish, Green Hmong and White Hmong at

The Board has launched a search to find the best superintendent to meet the needs of a diverse and growing district of over 62,000 students and 5,000 employees. EGUSD is the largest district in Northern California and the 5th largest in the state. In June, Superintendent Steven M. Ladd, Ed.D., announced his retirement as of September 12, 2014. Ladd is the 5th superintendent in the District’s 55 year history.

The information gathered will give guidance to the Board on the attributes that the community feels are important to consider in the next superintendent. In addition, the information provides an opportunity for the Board to receive valuable communication on the direction of the school district. Lastly, the comments, suggestions, and recommendations will be given to the newly selected superintendent as a reflection of EGUSD.

The Board has hired a professional search firm, McPherson & Jacobson, LLC, to assist in finding a new leader for our District. Representatives from the search firm will lead the community discussion and analyze the survey results. For more information and updates, please visit the EGUSD website at
